30,000-Year-Old Baby Woolly Mammoth Found Preserved in Canada’s Yukon
YUKON, CANADA: A remarkably well-preserved baby woolly mammoth, estimated to be around 30,000 years old, has been recovered from permafrost in Canada’s Yukon Territory.
The discovery was made on June 21, 2022, when miner Travis Mudry was working in the Klondike goldfields. While removing frozen ground during placer mining operations, a section of the frozen earth broke away, revealing the remains of a small animal.

Initially believed to be a mummified bison, the discovery was identified as a woolly mammoth after experts examined its distinctive fur, skin, tail and trunk.
Yukon government palaeontologist Grant Zazula described the specimen as an extraordinary Ice Age discovery and noted that it is considered the most complete woolly mammoth ever recovered in North America.
The discovery also holds cultural significance, as it was made within the traditional territory of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation, whose people have longstanding ties to the region.
