New Delhi | August 15, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the historic Red Fort on India’s 80th Independence Day, laying out an ambitious roadmap for a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
In his 13th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort, the Prime Minister placed strong emphasis on national interest, self-reliance, economic strength, technology, youth and national security.
This year’s celebrations carry special significance as India marks 150 years of Vande Mataram. For the first time during the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort, the national song was rendered as part of the celebrations.
“Shakti Ki Sapt Dhara”
One of the central themes of the Prime Minister’s address was “Shakti Ki Sapt Dhara” — seven streams of strength.
He identified seven areas that he said would be crucial for India’s next phase of development:
- Manufacturing
- Agriculture and food processing
- Technology and innovation
- Gati Shakti and infrastructure
- Defence
- Green and blue economy
- Soft power
The Prime Minister said India must move forward with greater speed and achieve in the coming years what could not be achieved over several decades.
Strong Push for Swadeshi and Self-Reliance
Prime Minister Modi made a strong pitch for Swadeshi, Make in India and Vocal for Local, arguing that India’s economic interests must remain at the centre of its development strategy.
He called for stronger domestic manufacturing and greater global competitiveness for Indian companies.
The Prime Minister also set an ambitious economic target of having at least 50 Indian companies in the Fortune 500, underlining his vision of India becoming a major global economic power.
One Crore Youth to Receive AI Training
Artificial Intelligence emerged as another major focus of the address.
Prime Minister Modi announced that one crore young Indians will receive AI-related skill training over the next year.
The objective, he said, is to ensure that India does not merely consume emerging technologies but develops the talent and capabilities needed to lead in the AI era.
Free Online Coaching for Competitive Exams
The Prime Minister also announced a new initiative aimed at reducing the financial pressure on families whose children prepare for competitive examinations.
The government plans to provide free online coaching, using India’s digital infrastructure and qualified teachers so that students can access quality preparation without having to move to expensive coaching centres.
₹1 Lakh Crore Push for Youth Innovation
In another major announcement focused on young Indians, Prime Minister Modi highlighted a ₹1 lakh crore initiative for ideas, innovation and research.
He called upon young people to dream big and pursue ambitious ideas, assuring them that lack of resources should not become a barrier to innovation and entrepreneurship.
Defence and National Security
National security remained an important component of the address.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of Raksha Shakti as a key pillar of Viksit Bharat and emphasised strengthening India’s defence capabilities and strategic self-reliance.
He also spoke about the changing nature of modern warfare and the need to build a stronger and more technologically advanced security ecosystem.
From “Fragile Five” to a Global Economic Power
Reflecting on India’s economic journey, Prime Minister Modi said the country had moved from being counted among the world’s “Fragile Five” economies to becoming the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
He presented this transformation as evidence of India’s growing economic resilience and argued that the next stage must focus on taking India among the world’s leading economic powers.
The 2047 Mission
The central message of the Prime Minister’s Independence Day address was the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047.
With India approaching the centenary of its independence, Prime Minister Modi called for a national effort built around economic strength, technological leadership, manufacturing, youth participation, innovation and national security.
His message from the Red Fort was direct:
India must think bigger, become stronger and build its future with confidence in its own capabilities.
As India begins the next chapter of its journey towards 2047, the focus will now shift from announcing ambitions to delivering measurable results.
