China’s military modernization has become one of the most closely watched geopolitical developments in Asia. Over the past decade, Beijing has steadily increased its defence spending, expanded its naval presence, modernised its missile forces, and intensified military activities around Taiwan and the South China Sea. Recent military exercises and missile tests have once again drawn international attention, raising concerns among neighbouring countries and Western allies.
One of the reasons 2027 is frequently mentioned is that it marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of China’s military, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Many defence analysts believe Beijing aims to significantly improve its military capabilities by then, particularly its ability to conduct complex joint operations. While some observers link 2027 with potential preparations related to Taiwan, there is no official announcement from China stating that military action will occur in that year.
China has continued investing heavily in aircraft carriers, advanced fighter jets, hypersonic weapons, cyber capabilities, artificial intelligence, and long-range missile systems. At the same time, Taiwan has strengthened its own defence preparations with support from partners such as the United States, while Japan, Australia, and other regional countries have expanded defence cooperation.
This week, China’s submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific drew criticism from Australia, Japan, and New Zealand, with officials expressing concern over regional stability. China described the launch as a routine military exercise, highlighting the growing strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific.
Despite rising tensions, most experts believe that all major powers understand the enormous economic and political consequences of a direct conflict. Diplomacy, military deterrence, and strategic competition are therefore expected to continue alongside efforts to avoid open war.
As Asia becomes the centre of global economic and strategic competition, China’s military expansion will remain one of the defining international stories of this decade.
