India is set to enter a new era of sustainable transportation as Indian Railways prepares to launch the country’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train. The train is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17 from Jind, Haryana, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey towards cleaner and greener mobility.
The hydrogen-powered train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route under the Northern Railway zone. Unlike conventional diesel locomotives, the train uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity. The only by-products of this process are water and heat, making it a zero-emission alternative that can significantly reduce pollution and carbon emissions.
The project is part of Indian Railways’ broader mission to modernise the country’s transport network while promoting clean energy technologies. The train has undergone extensive testing and is equipped with advanced hydrogen storage systems and multiple safety features before entering commercial service.
Hydrogen-powered trains have already been introduced in a few countries, including Germany, but this launch represents a major breakthrough for India. It reflects the country’s growing focus on innovation, energy security, and environmentally friendly infrastructure. The initiative is also expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support India’s long-term climate goals.
If operations begin as planned, the launch will become a landmark achievement for Indian Railways and strengthen India’s position among nations adopting next-generation green transport technologies. Experts believe the success of this project could pave the way for more hydrogen-powered trains across the country in the coming years, helping transform the future of rail travel while protecting the environment.
